Overview: Pukkelpop is one of the largest outdoor music festivals in Belgium. In 2006, over 135,000 attended the event, and this number is only expected to increase over the next few years as the festival increases in popularity. When the event was first founded in 1985, the Pukkelpop lineup consisted of only 7 lesser known bands. Last year, in 2007, the Arcade Fire, Kaiser Chiefs, Nine Inch Nails, The Smashing Pumpkins, and Tool were some of the bigger names playing at the event.

Where: Kiewit, Belgum (near Hasselt)

When: August 14th, 15th, and 16th in 2008

Getting There:

By Plane: Scan all airlines for the cheapest flights with the CheapTickets Flights Tab.

By train: Take the train to Kiewit Station (one stop past Hasselt station) and walk 500m (550 yards) to the festival grounds. The round-trip ride is free of charge with your festival pass. See the official site for more details. Check the train schedule at NMBS/SNCB – Belgium Railways.

By bus: It is free to travel by bus using your festival pass.

By bike: There is a special guarded section for bikes at the festival. It opens one hour before the festival starts and closes an hour after it ends.

Accomodations:

The majority of Pukkelpop festival goers bring tents and stay at the campsite near Kiewit Station.  Mobile homes and motorbikes aren’t allowed at the site.  It is free for anyone with a Pukkelpop pass, and you can bring your own food as long as it’s not packed in glass.

The campgrounds have stands with everything you might need -  food, water, soap, toilet paper, etc.  There are free showers which are generally open from 7AM until 12AM midnight (make sure to doublecheck these times when you arrive).

Safety:  Lockers are available for you to store your valuables.  Don’t leave anything important in your tent – thefts can and do occur.

Note – before heading to the campsite, make sure to exchange your ticket for a wristband at the festivals’ entrance.  You can’t access the campgrounds without one.
